First, to do no harm

is an old and important doctrine in medicine ("Primum non nocere" in latin).

Avoidable surgical complications account for a large proportion of preventable deaths globally and surgical safety knowledge is fundamental. The surgical team needs to effectively prepare, minimize the risk for surgical site infection and communicate during and after surgery.
