Dissection aids
By Nikolaj Nerup, MD, PhD and Peter Olsen Svenningsen, MD
Several tools to aid in the coagulation, dissection, and division of vessels and organs are available. Tools come in different models, depending on the purpose and the surgical approach (open, laparoscopic, and robot-assisted surgery). However, in general laparoscopic instruments may also be used in open surgery. There is evidence in the literature indicating that the use of these modern tools may reduce blood loss and operative time, but the cost effectiveness remains uncertain.
The following video shows only a small fraction of the available tools. Careful use close to delicate structures and knowledge of the use of any instrument is mandatory.
